Autism and ADHD Assessments
Important Update: Right to Choose (RTC) Referrals for ADHD & Autism Assessments 1st April 2026.
Demand for Autism and ADHD services across England is higher than the NHS financial resources available and the funding available to NHS Greater Manchester for 2026/27 has not increased.
From 1st April 2026, there have been changes to how ADHD and autism assessments are managed in Greater Manchester.
These changes do not affect your right to choose where you receive care. You can still choose from a range of providers, including local services and Right to Choose providers. The aim is to make sure that, wherever you are seen, your care meets the same high standards.
Across NHS Greater Manchester, providers are now expected to offer autism assessments face to face, and to carry out ADHD physical health checks in person.
Some providers have not been able to move to this model of care. In these cases, NHS Greater Manchester has worked with them to return patients to local services so that assessments can be completed in line with these standards.
All referrals remain on the waiting list, and no one will lose their place. As appointments become available, patients will be contacted in order of their original referral date where no additional prioritisation has taken place.

Right to choose Providers
Thank you for your interest in a referral for an adult ADHD/ASD assessment. Please note that this information is specifically for adults.
- As Right to Choose is a personal option you are advised to research your options before making a request for a referral; this is to avoid additional delays caused by a rejected referral by GMICB
When selecting a Right to Choose provider, it is vital to ensure that:
- You meet their referral criteria.
- They can prescribe medication for you, if this is something you wish to pursue. Your GP will not be able to perform health checks before starting medication, your specialist must be able to do this.
- You are aware of their waiting times; We appreciate that you will be keen to be assessed as soon as possible, however, please do not choose a provider simply because it has the shortest waiting time – do check that it is the right service for you.

Once you have chosen a provider then please submit an online request via our practice website and our team will help you with the next steps.

Please note that NHS GPs have no obligation to perform any investigations or prescribe any medications following attendance at a private OR right to choose provider.

Many Right to Choose ADHD/ASD services operate as independent businesses, their ability to provide you with specialist care may suddenly cease if they stop trading or lose their NHS contract. This is one reason it is considered unsafe to prescribe on their behalf, given the requirement for ongoing review and monitoring of both your condition and specialist medication.
